I was setting up a new site on IIS 7 to deploy a new .NET 4.0 web application. After I create the site, application pool and give all the right permission to the user's folder of my new application including giving write permission to C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\Temporary ASP.NET Files, I'm still presented with this error message: 401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials on IIS 7.

At first, I check on my Website basic settings to make sure the "Connect as" credential have the correct permission but that still doesn't help much. After much tinkering with IIS, it ended up I have to change my Application Pool Identity under Advanced Settings  - Process Model - Identity. You can change it to Network Service if you allow it to access that particular user's folder to simplify the process. In my case I further restrict the Identity to run as the same user specified in the "Connect as" website settings since it's an Active Directory user.
